Making Your Own Quarantzine

By Eliana Wasserman

Here at Illumination, we love zines. We even hosted a zine-making event! This event was, of course, before the pandemic induced social isolation.

During this time of social isolation, people have been getting creative with how they express themselves and interact in artist communities. Many people have started making quarantzines (quarantine+zines), a great way to process thoughts and feelings and document this strange, unprecedented time.

Here is an example of a quarantzine made by our Marketing Director, Madeline Rasmussen!

We want to help you make your own quarantzine! There are no rules to this, so you can create a little booklet any way you want, but we are going to share a simple booklet fold that can be made out of one sheet of standard computer paper. This method is nice because you can unfold it flat and make photocopies of it for easy duplication.

Fold your piece of paper lengthwise, and then width-wise, making sure all folds are crisp. Next, put your paper sideways in front of you, and fold each side to the center, making crisp folds. Next, fold the paper in half width-wise and cut from the center fold to halfway, Next, pinch either side and meet those sides together. Now you should have your booklet! If this explainer paragraph was hard to follow, check out this video or check out the resources below.

So now that you have your little booklet, what are you going to put in it? Here are some ideas:

  • Your daily schedule in this pandemic

  • Funny moments from your online classes

  • A 7 panel comic appreciating essential workers

  • A collage made from old school assignments

  • Things you miss most about the ‘ole days before the pandemic

  • The first activities you’re going to do as soon as this pandemic is over

  • Your top struggle meals that you’ve made since being socially isolated

  • Top songs to sing while washing your hands for the CDC recommended 20 seconds

What other ideas do you have for a quarantzine? Let us know! Also, if you make your own quarantzine, reach out and we’ll feature it on our social media!

Stay healthy and stay creative!
